The Padded Cell

Designed by

Nanna and Jørgen Ditzel

1952

This was Nanna and Jørgen Ditzel's first stairscape. It is based on an observation Nanna and Jørgen made while standing on their dining table: They were free of all furniture legs, they experienced the surfaces, and they discovered the possibility of using cubic metres instead of just square metres. The stairscape was built as a multi-level terrace covered with a soft layer of fabric. The furniture was made of foam rubber, and both this and the many small support cushions could be moved freely. Aagaard Andersen was responsible for the colour scheme of daring blue, yellow and red.
Designed and Manufactured for an avant-garde exhibition at Winkel og Magnussen.
